As a tradition lasting from the past 20 years, the Municipality of Hersonissos has participated also in 2015 to the nationwide environmental awareness campaign on beach cleaning organized by the NGO Mesogeios SOS. The Municipality of Hersonissos strongly supported the beach cleaning activity by encouraging citizens to participate. In total 120 primary school children and elderly cleaned the beach of the small port of Gournes on the 10th June.
The participants bridged of their age gap and worked hand in hand to remove litter of any type from the beach, in an effort to stress the fact that maintaining a clean and healthy environment is everybody’s responsibility. The young students were then guided by Ms. Marianna Kapatagi – Apostolaki into a fun activity of turning the litter they had collected, particularly the plastic bags, into something useful. The activity ended with the participants following a presentation on thermal pollution and lessepsian migration provided by the Hellenic Centre of Marine Research (HCMR) at the Aquarium of Crete (Cretaquarium). Thermal pollution was linked to runoff discharges and to the unsustainable stormwater management practices. Extensive reference was made to the E2STORMED outcomes and project promotional material was distributed to the students.
